LeadTip #22 A Philippians 2 Leader
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. Philippians 2:3
Honoring, respecting, valuing and appreciating those you work and serve with are essential characteristics of a good leader. Any organization that esteems and acknowledges the unique gifts and talents of each individual and their contribution will flourish in its mission.
Creating a culture of humble service for the cause of Christ takes leaders who will not operate under selfish ambition. A person who is seeking success for personal gain and accolades on the shoulders of others will ultimately fail. The Bible says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Godly leadership is just as concerned with people as results. People belong to God and should not be owned by man’s ambitions. God is love, so if you want the blessing and approval of the LORD you must operate in the virtues of love.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 1 Corinthians 13:4
Operating in love does not mean standards are not high for achievement and excellence, and there is no correction and discipline. But it does mean there is always consideration for the value of human dignity while apprehending goals and vision.
Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Psalm 127:1
The church above any other organization has the greatest example of Philippians 2:3 leadership. Jesus Christ, its Head, CEO, Chairman of the Board, Senior of Senior Pastors, Leader of Leaders, did nothing out of selfish ambition. He did not see himself superior to those who served on His team. He called them friends and not servants.
“Who, being in very nature a God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Philippians 2:6-8
Be a Philippians 2 leader. Be a Philippians 2 person!
