Spiritual Double Vision

Matthew 6:22-23 New King James Version (NKJV)

22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! The book of Matthew talks about what a disciples life should look like; and not only that, but also the kind of relationship Jesus desires with His disciples.

The Lamp of the Body is the Eye

A lamp is a device for giving light. If the Bible says that your eye is the lamp, then your eyes are the device for giving light. Wouldn't it make sense that you would guard what you see? I think about my own life and raising kids, and it makes me think about a time with my son. A couple years ago I was obsessed with the show “The Walking Dead”. One night, as I was watching it, my son (who was probably 5 at the time) came in and said, “Mom, when you watch this God is standing next to you shaking his head”. Yeah, I was pretty speechless! I felt God's loving conviction in that moment. I didn't feel hate, condemnation, or unloved. I knew the Lord was speaking to me through this little 5 year old!

In Matthew 6:23 the Bible states, “If the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness.” Preacher C. H. Spurgeon comments on the Scripture by saying, “The motive is the eye of the soul, and if it be clear, the whole character will be right; but if it be polluted, our whole being will become defiled”. Wow! Are our eyes clear so that God can use us, or have they been defiled?

Finding Your Identity

I'm the second-born of four girls. We’re all Puerto Rican and American, but out of all of them I have the darkest complexion. In high school I hung out with all the Spanish people because that's where I wanted to find my identity. I was completely wrapped up in trying to be as “Puerto Rican” as I could be, so when I came to the Lord and found my identity in Christ, being Puerto Rican was a bonus! I say this because there was a lot that I had to get rid of in my heart, and in my life, in order to walk in my identity as a Christian. I had to get rid of some of the things that I was used to singing/watching/listening to/dancing to; things that I knew made the Holy Spirit inside of me “shake his head”, in the words of a five year old.

Maintaining Clear Eyes

Let’s not have spiritual double-vision by trying to walk with the Lord, but still clinging to pieces of the world that make us feel comfortable. We must maintain a clear eye on God, giving Him our sole attention. I pray today that you read this with an open heart and that you allow God to speak to you about whatever it is that may be giving you spiritual double vision.

"Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light."- Matthew 6:21-22.
